  18. <p>     Among corporate raiders, Coniston Partners was the ultimate
  19. upstart. Some of its targets had barely even heard of Coniston
  20. until it was too late. The firm's runs against such companies
  21. as Gillette and the Allegis travel conglomerate brought returns
  22. of more than 40% to the small pool of investors who put a
  23. minimum of $5 million apiece into Coniston's funds. But as
  24. raiding went out of fashion, the firm's success began to wane.
  25. Last week Coniston said it would disband the $700 million pool
  26. that funded its takeover bids and proxy fights. But partners
  27. Keith Gollust, Paul Tierney and Augustus Oliver are not
  28. retiring. They plan to put their bankroll into real estate,
  29. venture capital and possibly an occasional takeover deal for
  30. old times' sake.
